It is a great shock for me to learn that my first book, Freckleface Strawberry, has been banned by the Trump Administration from schools run by the Department of Defense. Freckleface Strawberry is a semi-autobiographical story about a seven year old girl who dislikes her freckles but eventually learns to live with them when she realizes that she is different “just like everybody else.” It is a book I wrote for my children and for other kids to remind them that we all struggle, but are united by our humanity and our community. I am particularly stunned because I am a proud graduate of Frankfurt American High School a #DOD school that once operated in Frankfurt, Germany. I grew up with a father who is a Vietnam veteran and spent his career in the #USArmy. I could not be prouder of him and his service to our country. It is galling for me to realize that kids like me, growing up with a parent in the service and attending a @dodea_edu school will not have access to a book written by someone whose life experience is so similar to their own. And I can’t help but wonder what is so controversial about this picture book that cause it to be banned by the US Government. I am truly saddened and never thought I would see this in a country where freedom of speech and expression is a constitutional right. Thank you to @penamerica for bringing this to my attention. #FAHS #frecklefacestrawberry @uyenloseordraw @thebookgrp
Hello from me #frecklefacestrawberry 🍓 Whenever I read my books to kids, I always ask them to guess who the real Freckleface Strawberry is, and then I roll up my sleeves and show them my freckles. I want them to understand that even grown ups remember feeling different as kids, and that the feelings don’t go away entirely, but they do change. I want to thank you all for your kindness toward me and my books – because of the deluge of orders @bloomsburypublishing is reprinting Freckleface Strawberry! So you will have your copies very soon. THANK YOU for the incredible amount of support you have shown me and Freckleface! @thebookgrp @uyenloseordraw ❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️🍓❤️

Today, my #WomanCrushWednesday is Angelle Bradford, a founding member of @la_momsdemandaction’s chapter. For the last 10 years, Angelle has been at the forefront of advocating for change in one of the most challenging environments. Louisiana has the 2nd-highest rate of gun deaths and the 2nd-highest rate of gun injuries in the U.S. Living in New Orleans, Angelle has had a front row seat to the devastating effects of gun violence on NOLA communities, where a staggering quarter of all gun homicide deaths in the state take place. But despite state lawmaker inaction to pass common-sense gun safety laws, Angelle has remained unwavering in her advocacy, proving a powerful voice for the gun safety movement and inspiring countless other volunteers in her state. Today, alongside fellow @momdemandaction volunteers, Angelle continues to push the state forward through her excellent leadership and relentless commitment to end gun violence in Louisiana. “I look forward to a near-future Louisiana where communities have greater autonomy over the safety measures they can take for their families,” Angelle has said. Angelle’s devotion to making her state a safer place is nothing short of inspiring. Thank you @angellebrad for raising the bar for what it means to show up for your community.
This week’s #WomanCrushWednesday goes to North Carolina State Representative for District 57, @tracyclarkfornc. Tracy first stepped into advocacy with @momsdemand_nc in 2018, working to protect North Carolina’s limited gun safety laws in a challenging political landscape. In 2024, she took her commitment to the next level, representing Northern Greensboro in the North Carolina House of Representatives–first through appointment, then by winning her seat outright. Tracy sharpened her skills through #DemandASeat, a candidate training program by the Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund, to help ensure she was ready to effectively represent her constituents and be a true #GunSafetyChampion. She has lost three people in her life to gun violence so her advocacy and legislative work on gun violence prevention is deeply personal. Since taking office, Tracy has been a leading voice in the North Carolina State House when it comes to life-saving gun safety measures, championing legislation supporting secure firearm storage and extreme risk protection orders. This week, she introduced legislation for gun owners to report a lost or stolen firearm within 24 hours, which would make NC one of only 17 states with requirements for reporting lost and stolen guns on the books. Research shows that guns reported lost were three times more likely to be used in crimes. Stolen guns had nearly nine times the likelihood. Thank you, Tracy, for your leadership, dedication, and relentless pursuit of a safer future for all. #WCW
This week, my #WomanCrushWednesday is @StudentsDemandAction volunteer Cara Chen from Portland, Oregon! Cara joined the gun violence prevention movement at the age of 14 after the tragic 2021 Atlanta spa shootings, which deeply impacted her as an Asian American who grew up in Atlanta. Determined to take action to protect her community from hate-motivated violence, she founded a Students Demand Action chapter at Lakeridge High School, leading walkouts, advocating for LGBTQ suicide prevention, and more. Her relentless advocacy led to Oregon lawmakers filing a bill to bar those with violent misdemeanor convictions—not just hate crimes—from owning guns, with Cara named as the citizen requestor. Now at Columbia University, she’s continuing the fight as a graduate of #DemandASeat: Students Edition, a program by Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund designed to train grassroots volunteers and gun violence survivors to run for elected office. Cara’s passion and leadership are shaping a safer future. On Sunday, we marked four years since the Atlanta spa shootings, the catalyst for Cara’s advocacy and I stand with @_carachen in the fight to end gun violence. Thank you for all you do! #WCW
