Jammu – ‘Place of Balidan and Bhakti’ UNSUNG HERO – CAPTAIN. DIWAN SINGH JI 🫡 My trip to Jammu was nothing like I had planned, but it turned out to be better than I expected. As a child, I would shiver at the thought of traveling to a place where the word ‘terror’ was often used. However, my perception changed when I visited Jammu. Jammu and Kashmir reminds me of Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, a warrior revered throughout history. The beautiful temples, each one special and powerful, left me in awe. But what struck me the most was the ‘Dogri Culture and its people.’ After shooting for a short while on Jammu’s culture, craft, and history, I met the beautiful Mrs. Sarita Singh ji, who embodied royalty and charm. Her demeanor was captivating, and I felt an instant connection. During our conversation, she expressed her immense love for her father-in-law, Capt. Diwan Singh ji, an unsung hero of Jammu and Kashmir valley. His contributions were varied, from fighting at the border to promoting girl child education. He was one of the last men standing and a trusted advisor to Maharaja Hari Singh. The house where we sat is a gift from Maharaja Hari Singh to Capt. Diwan for his unconditional services to the land and royalty. The house is filled with memories, from pictures over a hundred years old to a dining table with a replica at the London museum. We tried to capture these beautiful moments in a short while. The most beautiful moment was when Mrs. Sarita Singh ji helped me get ready in a 30-year-old Dogri dress with original gold zari in the beautiful 100-year-old royal bungalow.
