My dad was nocturnal his whole adult life. He kept “jazz hours” starting in high school and never looked back. When I was little, I would wake up in the middle of the night to search for him. Undoubtedly, he would be somewhere in the house, composing (old school, with a pen and sheet music). He would never send me back to bed. He would smile and bring me into his arms while he continued to work…there was no safer place in the world for me. He was a giant. An icon. A culture shifter. A genius. All accurate descriptions of my father but his music (and ALL of his work) was a channel for his love. He WAS love. He made everyone he ever met feel loved and seen. That’s his legacy. I was fortunate enough to experience this love in close proximity. I’ll miss his hugs and kisses and unconditional devotion and advice. Daddy, it is an honor to be your daughter. Your love lives forever.
Thank you @theacademy for honoring our father’s legacy with such depth and care and joy: a perfect representation of him. It was an emotional night that I know he loved, wherever he is. 💜💜💜 Photos courtesy of The Academy

For our March 2025 Legacy Issue, @rashidajones served as our music director, reflecting on the life and career of her late father, Quincy Jones, by sharing a playlist of songs that embody his joyful spirit. “Rather than attempt the impossible task of culling down a definitive playlist of a musical giant, I encourage everyone to go deep in his catalog. It’s extensive, and it’s a gift,” Jones tells Bazaar. “Instead, I’ve chosen to focus on songs that I feel embody the father I loved the most. The songs in this playlist transport me back to a childhood defined by the warmth of his community of extraordinary musicians, the grooviest bass lines, the most propulsive horn jabs, the richest orchestrations, and the most soulful vocal arrangements: songs that personify the warmth and affection and joy of having grown up not with an icon or a legend but the best dad I could have imagined.” Head to the link in bio to check out the full playlist.

It’s premiere day for @aswimlesson on @latimesdocs and @povdocs! “A Swim Lesson” is our short film about Bill Marsh, a fantastic swim teacher whose teachings ensure young children survive in water. But beyond that the film is filled with his wisdom around parenting, overcoming fear, and ultimately, finding the courage to fly. Directed by me and @willmccormack. Links to watch in bio 🩵
“Within Bill’s teaching, there’s so many kernels of truth and wisdom in terms of how we all live our lives….it’s about the pool and it’s also not about the pool.” Thank you to my dear friend Amy Poehler for leading a lovely conversation about @aswimlesson with @willmccormack, @swimtobill and I. Link to full convo in my bio.

Thrilled and honored to be among 15 short documentary films that have been shortlisted for the Academy Awards!
Watching a child learn how to swim is like witnessing a great opera. It’s a tale filled with agony, ecstasy, absurdity, fear, hope, despair, joy, connection and love. Lots and lots of love. The L.A. Times Short Docs’ “A Swim Lesson” celebrates the inherent strength and resilience with which we are born into this world. At a time of great division, we felt drawn to Bill and his teaching which is so pure, so profound. @aswimlesson is shortlisted for the 97th Oscars in the best documentary short film category.
