Iza Calzado Instagram – To cap off women’s month, I would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness on and highlight the amazing work that my acting teacher and friend @anavaldeslim has been doing for our fellow women Persons Deprived of Liberty at the Correctional Institution for Women in Mandaluyong together with our officers at the Bureau of Corrections.
For 11 years now, Teacher Ana has being conducting theater classes and courses at CIW together with other teachers including her sister Bingky Camara. I was fortunate to be invited to visit and watch our actors do presentations some excerpts from Shakespeare, Chekhov, Greek Tragedies and even scenes from some of my work.
We started the session with 3 minutes of silence where we all connected, soul to soul, human to human in the present moment.i witnessed how art transformed and empowered these women finding purpose inside CIW.
In the few hours we were together, we shared stories of pain, sorrow, resilience and redemption. We also celebrated the gift of hope that resides in the heart of every PDL, every woman, ready to finally be set free and be given a chance to start anew.

To our PDLs I met that day, I carry all your stories and love in my heart. I hope to hug you in the outside world one day soon. Until we meet again. Mahal ko kayo.
