🌿 Meet Ada, an orphaned chimpanzee at our Tchimpounga sanctuary, who’s showing off her natural dental care routine! 🦷✨ Dr. Jane Goodall famously observed that chimpanzees, our closest genetic cousins, make and use tools. In the wild and at our sanctuary, the JGI team has observed how chimpanzees use sticks, grass stems, or even tough fibers to clean their teeth — much like a toothbrush! This natural tool use helps remove food particles and keeps their gums healthy. Observations like these remind us how intelligent and resourceful our closest relatives are. At Tchimpounga, Ada is thriving with the love and care she deserves. 💚 Learn more about our work to care for 158 rescued chimpanzees and other wildlife at our sanctuary by exploring the Chimpanzee Guardian program at the link in our bio. #Tchimpounga #JGI #Chimpanzee #JaneGoodall #Conservation 📸: Fernando Turmo . . . 🌿 Then & Now: Celebrating 48 Years of the Jane Goodall Institute! 🎉 On this date in 1977, Dr. Jane Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) with a bold vision: to inspire hope and transform it into action on behalf of people, other animals, and the planet we share. It all started with a commitment to continue Jane’s groundbreaking chimpanzee research in Gombe, Tanzania where she redefined our understanding of the animal kingdom through her observations of chimpanzee tool use, complex social behaviors, and deep emotional connections. Now JGI has grown into a network of 25 global chapters, all working to fulfill Jane’s vision: 🔍 Sustaining the longest-running wild chimpanzee study in Gombe — set to celebrate 65 years this summer 🐵 Providing best-in-class wildlife rehabilitation at two sanctuaries, home to nearly 200 rescued chimpanzees and other wildlife 🤝 Championing community-led conservation through our signature Tacare approach, which collaborates directly with local communities to find solutions to conservation challenges 🌱 Inspiring the next generation of changemakers through our youth engagement program Roots and Shoots, now active in 75 countries and counting From Gombe to the world, our mission continues to grow, but none of this would be possible without YOU — our dedicated supporters, partners, and changemakers. 💚 Here’s to the past, present, and future of JGI! 🎂🐵🌱 *JGI does not endorse handling or close proximity to wildlife. 🌴🦅 He’s not like the other vultures… Unlike most vultures, the palm-nut vulture (Gypohierax angolensis) thrives on a diet primarily made up of palm fruits—especially the nuts of oil and raffia palms. This rare dietary adaptation makes it a crucial seed disperser, helping to sustain the very forests it depends on. While these striking black-and-white raptors occasionally consume fish, carrion, and invertebrates, their fruit-heavy diet sets them apart as one of the most ecologically distinctive birds of prey. In Gombe Stream National Park, where JGI has been conducting groundbreaking chimpanzee research since 1960, the palm-nut vulture is part of the rich and complex ecosystem we’ve observed for decades. These expert gliders can often be seen soaring over the park’s lush forests and lakeshore—one of many species that contribute to the intricate tapestry of life supporting Gombe’s chimpanzees and biodiversity. Our long-time scientific adviser, Bill Wallauer, captured these stunning images during one of his many trips filming wild chimpanzee behavior in Gombe. Bill’s work to document the species of Gombe has taught us so much about this awe-inspiring ecosystem, and inspired and informed our work to protect it. 🌍💚 📸 JGI/Bill Wallauer . . . #PalmNutVulture #WildlifeConservation #JaneGoodallInstitute #JGI #Birds #Birders #Vulture #Biodiversity #Gombe

🤩🌳 Meet Marina, one of the incredible park rangers of Tchimpounga Nature Reserve! 🥾🍃 Tchimpounga Nature Reserve’s park rangers are employed by the Republic of the Congo government and trained by JGI to patrol the reserve for illegal activity and to monitor the park’s biodiversity. Their work is essential in protecting native wildlife and keeping our team at Tchimpounga sanctuary safe. 🌿🧭 Marina was recruited in 2023 by the conservator of Tchimpounga Nature Reserve, who had seen her skill working in Conkouati-Douli National Park and sought her out. With Marina’s expertise in using GPS and other tools, her team relies on her for navigation through challenging terrain. ♀💪 As the first female park ranger at Tchimpounga, Marina enjoys surprising villagers with her role! When they ask about a woman in her position, she explains that women are just as capable. Her strong work ethic has impressed her colleagues, who quickly acknowledge her toughness. She shared that she has yet to encounter anyone who challenges her authority because of her gender. 🫶 We love that Marina may inspire other young women to become park rangers, just like Jane inspired many scientists to follow in her footsteps! 📸 credit: JGI Republic of the Congo Alt text: Slide 1: A woman in camouflage gear uses a machete to cut and remove a snare trap from the forest floor. 🌍 Protecting Wildlife, Preserving Nature 🌱 The Gombe – Burundi Corridor is a vital route for wildlife, especially the endangered chimpanzee, connecting Gombe National Park @gombe.nationalpark with Burundi’s southern region. This corridor plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. 🌿🌍 In partnership with 11 local villages surrounding Gombe NP, JGI-TZ under the Gombe Stream Research Center @gombestream has been working tirelessly on conservation efforts to safeguard wildlife and forests. 🌳💚 Thanks to generous funding from the Yousef Warren Foundation through JGI – Canada @janegoodallcan, we’ve built a new ranger post within the corridor, strengthening our ability to monitor and protect this important area. Together with the local communities, we’re committed to preserving the forests and wildlife that call this place home. 🌟🐾 Video credit @steve_wildphotographer #Conservation #WildlifeProtection #GombeBurundiCorridor #EndangeredSpecies #Chimpanzees #SustainableFuture #EnvironmentalProtection #CommunityPartnership #natureconservation
