Reykjavik, Iceland 🇮🇸—home to the iconic Blue Lagoon and some of the best hotdogs (yes, we tried them, and they live up to the hype!). But beyond its beauty and bites, Iceland leads the world in gender equality. Attending the @reykjavikglobalforum was a powerful reminder that even trailblazers like Iceland face challenges like GBV, unequal pay, and systemic inequities. What sets this forum apart is its unique ability to convene policymakers, leaders, and activists in an intimate space—free from barriers and red tape—to focus on real solutions. 💡 Take a moment with me (and my pups 🐶) as I share a special message from @thordiselva (an absolute powerhouse 🫶🏾), and let’s continue to keep our pulse on progress and fairness. #ReykjavikGlobalForum #GenderEquality #PowerTogether #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #bts #Reykjavik24 #WomenLeaders #RedefiningProgress
“Conference With No Titles”—that’s how I’d describe the Reykjavík Global Forum: open rooms filled with voices that truly matter. Sharing space with presidents, a Nobel laureate, former First Ladies (see the first image: from left to right, Former First Lady of Canada, Sophie Trudeau; Former First Lady of Iceland, Eliza Reid; and our panel moderator Jackie Jones). The rooms were filled with founders and allies (second image), CEOs (or “SHE-EOs”), TV hosts, philanthropists, students, and young changemakers. And yet, titles were an afterthought, something I only realized later as I wrote this caption—because in that space, they were left at the door. Catch a great Day 1 highlights reel in the last slide, reposted from @reykjavikglobalforum. The real focus? Bold, impactful conversations on tackling online violence, balancing power, building alliances, empowering the next generation, and dismantling harmful cycles. These issues affect us all, titles aside. It’s a shared responsibility, and a reminder of our unity in finding solutions. More to come! Please share this widely! This is a critical moment for public participation to shape the future of our country. The proposed Bill aims to extend the term of office for the President from 5 to 7 years, as well as for governors, members of county assemblies, and others. The deadline to voice opposition to this threat to our rights and the risks these changes pose to our nation is this Friday, October 25, 2024—just two days away. Please use the template in the link in my bio and email: [email protected] and cc [email protected]. Let’s remain committed to building #TheKenyaWeWant ✊🏾 (Cc @bungelamayut_) Thank you to @swmbugua for bringing this to my attention.

Happy #MashujaaDay! What a week it’s been in Kenyan and global politics – From impeachments to high-stakes elections, the drama has been real. But a lot of what we’re seeing today goes way back to the kind of leadership we had after independence: more symbolic than impactful. If we really want change, we need to understand our past and use those lessons to move forward. It’s time to rethink leadership and build a future based on accountability and real progress. Lets unpack that – over some Kuku Kienyeji (free-range chicken) at @jaggypurekienyejichicken 👌🏾 #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #IOWJM #bts #KenyaPolitics #GlobalPolitics #LeadershipReset #AccountabilityFirst #SinsOfOurFathers Filmed and edited by @cyrus.kanyi for @jmmediaavenueproductions

I keep coming back to the title of this campaign—“Matriarchs of Climate Resilience.” How powerful does that sound? And even better, I love what it stands for! Women—especially Indigenous women—are leading the fight against climate change, and their resilience needs to be heard. This isn’t just about striking photos—it’s about bridging the gap between policymakers and the people most impacted. Join the movement by sharing these stories and supporting @lensational’s Empower Her Lens fund. The future of climate action lies in these women’s narratives—discover how you can make a difference through the link in their bio! #EmpowerHerLens #ClimateAction #SupportIndigenousVoices #Storytelling #PhotographyForChange
Before heading to Ha Njeri’s, which I mentioned in my video last week, I took some time to reflect on Kenya’s current state—and especially the role of women’s movements. Kenya is at a critical turning point. Corruption is rampant, access to basic services is dwindling, and political games seem to serve personal agendas over public good, leaving many to bear the weight of broken systems. Through it all, women’s voices have remained steadfast. For generations, they’ve led movements, fought injustices, and driven meaningful change. Co-MCing Hon. Millie Mabona Odhiambo’s book launch reminded me how vital women’s leadership is. Now more than ever, we need their collective strength to demand accountability and shape a fair, just future for all. #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #BTS #IOWJM #WomensMovements #Leadership
It’s October 11th, marking the #DayOfTheGirl! Some context – on December 19, 2011, the UN General Assembly passed Resolution 66/170, establishing this day to highlight girls’ rights and the unique challenges they face worldwide. While we’ve been observing this day for years, the journey towards achieving true equity for girls is still far off. In fact in many ways, we’re scaling back on gains made. Which is why we have to keep speaking up! Join us at @inuadada as we reflect on 11 voices over the past 11 days, envisioning a brighter future for girls, their communities, and the global movement. Something we all ought to be committed to ✨ #DayOfTheGirl #IDG2024 #GirlsVisionForTheFuture #InuaDada #GenderEquality #Empowerment

I’m thrilled to announce that following its premiere a few weeks ago, IMPURE, a powerful coming-of-age film tackling period stigma, will begin its theatrical run at Prestige Cinema Nairobi on October 11th, aligning with the International Day of the Girl Child. The film has received incredible reactions, with a talented cast and crew and a premier that featured many menstrual allies (see if you can spot them in this video highlight!). I’m excited to share that I make a special appearance in the film as well! IMPURE promises to spark vital conversations around #menstrualhealth and dignity. Get your tickets and bring family and friends for this impactful experience! “You’re just posting from home.” “All this complaining—can’t you see the country is moving forward?” “These protests are being run by thugs!” These are the dismissive comments we’ve heard since the #RejectFinanceBill2024 protests. But let’s face the truth: Kenya is struggling with corruption, poverty, violent crime, and stagnation in critical sectors. The protests were meant to unite us in collective outrage against a broken system, but instead, they were hijacked and misrepresented. We are pushing for the truth, however uncomfortable it may be. This moment is too important to ignore—we have a chance to address decades of misused public funds and oppressive politics that have placed power over people. Just last weekend, we saw a town hall descend into chaos. Patients are being turned away from hospitals because they can’t afford care. Even if this isn’t your reality, it’s the growing reality for most Kenyans. It’s Official – we all have a role to play. Everyone can contribute, even while managing daily life. Take action today—visit the link in my bio for the latest Auditor General’s report on these critical issues. Share any other helpful resources! Special thanks to Ha Njeri for treating us to some of the best Kenyan food I’ve had! Location – opposite ACK Church on Kirigiti Road, Kiambu.
