Caption : Our third episode of the Gender Justice Conversation with @equalitynoworg is closer home, here in Nairobi City, and this time @officialjanetmbugua and @bencyco and I sit down with university students to hear firsthand how digital platforms and social media have become powerful tools for propagating sexual and gender based violence through revenge porn, cyberbullying, and doxxing. But the most shocking revelation with this Nairobi episode? Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is making an alarming comeback, not in remote villages, but right here in the city, in affluent areas like Kiambu Road. Silence is no longer an option. These stories need to be heard, and real change must happen. The episode is on my channel, link in bioLikes : 1014

Caption : In our third episode of our new YouTube series: #GenderJustice Conversations, an in-depth look at gender-based violence (GBV) across Kenya, we explore Nairobi and find that even here in the urban context, sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) takes new forms, including technology facilitated gender-based violence (GBV) and sexual exploitation, while retaining the harsh realities of rape and female genital mutilate (FGM). Catch our conversation as we discuss emerging trends of GBV across Kenya with @Phil_Director, @officialjanetmbugua, @bencyco, Equality Now gender and legal experts, and key state and non-state actors. Caption : I first saw @officialjanetmbugua on Rush, the TV series, back in 2013. I loved her performance as an actress and knew I’d want to work with her someday. Eventually, I found the perfect role for her on @kash_money_series , but it took about two months to lock her down because of (our schedule and her schedule). As for @therealjohnsibioku, 🙌🏽 casting him was a no-brainer, but our casting manager reached out to him twice, and he said NO 😂😂😂. I told @theonlybrianrobert to tell him he had no choice, and the rest is history. It was an incredible experience shaping the vision with all the talented people on the show. Their professionalism and eagerness to learn were truly inspiring. Here’s one of my favorite scenes between the two—watching it in silence still captures the underlying tension and mistrust. Caption : A while back, I shared some BTS footage, and now the full video is up on YouTube. But after witnessing the What Women Want Summit this past weekend, it’s clear—when women are in the right spaces, they create real, powerful shifts! ✨🔥 From using their voices boldly to showcasing their brilliance, Dada Culture made its debut, and the energy was electric. This moment wasn’t just about presence—it was about impact. And if recent conversations have shown us anything, it’s that the right women in leadership don’t just participate; they transform. This is just the beginning. Women are driving the narrative, reshaping power, and making sure their voices aren’t just heard but felt. #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #DadaCulture #WomenLeadChange #btsLikes : 523

Caption : #InternationalWomensDay – Kenyan Women Of Firsts: 4/4, the final one 🙏🏾 Prof. Wangari Maathai: I can recall first seeing Wangari Maathai on the news in the 90’s. As a little girl, her grit and determination made an imprint in my memory, against the inhumane way in which she was being handled, as she fought for Kenya’s soil. I would later keep up to date with where she was and what she was doing, quietly following her journey and staying enamored by her. So when I met her face to face for the first time in 2009, a year after reading her memoir Unbowed, it’s the first time I’ve ever been struck to the point of babbling. I finally managed to say, “You mean a lot. To say many of us. I’m a Journalist, I was on KTN”. “Yes Janet, I think I’ve watched you”. And I was good from then on 😃 Seriously, I might not have stayed in advocacy/ activism were it not for the reminder that the fight for our rights, as women, as gatekeepers of our environment, for all human rights, is something that that we have to keep doing; and we do what we can in our own little way (her story of the Hummingbird) to keep going. I consider her one of the most influential figures in my life. Caption : Happy #EasterSunday 🙏🏾 Spend the morning with me at work as I prep for my job as a host — it’s been almost 11 weeks of #FixingTheNation, and so much has changed. I don’t get to do school drop-offs with my boys anymore (this one still kinda hurts), BUT we’ve found a special way to stay connected: morning love notes☺️. After nearly a decade away, I’m back in the mainstream, relearning, growing, and staying rooted in my purpose. This Easter reminded me to take life one moment at a time, to live it fully, and to always show up for what matters most. Caption : I co-host a daily show, and almost every week, sometimes more, a femicide case makes its way into the news cycle. Sometimes it’s not just one, but several. It’s heartbreaking. It’s terrifying. And it has to stop. This year alone: 129 women. Killed. Not by strangers. Not in war. At home. In schools. At work. By people who claimed to love them. This is femicide — and in Kenya, it’s not even recognized as a crime. From babies to grandmothers, women are being silenced every day. For saying no. For speaking up. For simply existing. It doesn’t start with murder. It starts with control, abuse, and silence. This April, speak up. Demand justice. Caption : Last week, during Fixing The Nation, my co-hosts (Mariam and Eric) and I shared an emotional moment on air while speaking with Telvin Mburu. His story, which has since gone viral, prompted a profound reflection: When was the last time you helped someone—simply because you could? Telvin’s act of kindness towards Viola wasn’t driven by wealth or status, but by something far more powerful: a heart that still feels. In a nation where many are in survival mode, stories like these remind us that helping doesn’t require much—just willingness and heart. (P.S. Apologies for the mix-up in the video—I was probably a bit sleepy when I said ‘Friday’ instead of ‘Wednesday’ at the start.) #FixingTheNation airs weekdays, 6AM to 10AM on NTV Kenya, Nation FM and online. #ItsOfficialwithJanetMbugua #BTS #Compassion #NotAllHeroesWearCapes Filmed and edited by @jmmediaavenueproductionsLikes : 3

Inflicting fear and chaos on children for daring to tell the truth through art? This is not just an attack on students—it’s an assault on creativity, free expression, and the right to feel safe in school. Silencing young voices won’t erase the truth. It only deepens the wound. We must speak up. For the girls. For the future. For justice. Caption : Yesterday on Fixing the Nation, we interviewed former AG and Public Service CS Justin Muturi — and today, his revelations are making headlines nationwide. While shocking, his statements largely confirm what many Kenyans have felt for years: leadership in Kenya prioritizes power over public service, reinforcing the cycle of politics and corruption. His words are making waves, but we asked — why now? If he knew the depth of corruption, why not speak up sooner or step aside? You can read or watch the full interview for his reasons, and learn more about the broader issues we discussed with him. The key takeaway: We, the people, must keep the momentum, stay informed, stay vocal, and vote for leadership that serves the public. Caption : The first Dada Culture session was an inspiring and powerful conversation on how women are shaping culture and challenging societal norms. The #DadaCulture platform, in association with @inuadada and @jmmediaavenueproductions. The platform celebrates those who have paved the way—and those who continue to drive change across different sectors, from arts and activism to entrepreneurship. This video starts with a few highlights from our discussion with @lushangela_, @_lydiakm and @muthonidrummerqueen, and I’ll be sharing the full video soon. A huge thank you to the What Women Want Summit for the opportunity and to my amazing panelists for their incredible insights. Yet, many entrepreneurs struggle with access to markets, funding, and visibility. Caption : I love the quote, “Shame dies when stories are told.” We could take it a step further by adding, “in safe spaces.” Easier said than done, because shame has a way of manifesting in our lives—sometimes as self-doubt, silence, or even misplaced guilt. But what happens when we confront it head-on? Behind the scenes of our #womensday special with Adelle Onyango and Caroline Mutoko (those videos are up on our various channels), our production team and I took a moment to have an open conversation about speaking to our shame instead of letting it define us. What does your shame sound like, and how do you respond to it? Let’s talk. #itsofficialwithjanetmbugua #ConfrontYourShame #HealingThroughConversation #WomensDaySpecial Filmed and edited by @leonmaluLikes : 3

We had influential voices such as Dr. Norah Obudho, @officialjanetmbugua, Evelyne Opondo and an incredible live audience, have a conversation on feminism within the African context. We explored the root causes of gender inequality in our communities and how we can go about achieving equal rights, power, and opportunities for ALL women. Caption : “When women have the power of choice, they gain the power of voice.” I mean 🤷🏾♀️ Unpaid care work isn’t just about time—it’s about autonomy. Sitting down with @adelleonyango and @caroline.mutoko for this conversation opened my eyes even more to how deeply this issue impacts women’s ability to pursue education, careers, and leadership. The weight of unpaid labor isn’t just personal; it’s systemic. When care work is recognized and supported, women can make informed choices about their futures, step into spaces of influence, and thrive. This discussion taught me so much, and I know it will do the same for you. Watch the full conversation—now live on my YouTube page! Suddenly, your entire family is down, and you’re left sending a million apologies, feeling hurt, confused, and yes, even ashamed—not just for yourself but for those who were counting on you. The biggest weight? The opportunities lost, especially for the people who worked so hard alongside you. Really gutted that I won’t make it to Austin, Texas, to attend SXSW, and I’ve been put on sick leave for a week. I’ll also have to #FixTheNation from a distance. It’s wild how the body can throw you off course (honestly haven’t felt this sick since 2021, but no, I’m not fishing for sympathy!). In many ways, it feels like my body is saying, “Relax, I’ve got other plans—you just have to trust me.” Apologies for any inconvenience this may have caused, but also giving myself grace because this was beyond my control. Also folks, please mask up in crowded spaces—this virus is no joke. So many people are seriously unwell right now. That said, here are some moments I’m still celebrating: 2. Honored to be featured on this incredible LinkedIn list for Women’s Day week, alongside some truly amazing women. Full list on my LinkedIn profile (at-JanetMbugua) 3. #FixingTheNation on NTV Kenya and Nation FM just turned a month old on March 3rd, and it’s already been such an eye-opening journey! 4. As we celebrate milestones, let’s also hold space for the urgent conversation on ending femicide. We must keep amplifying this issue. #ItsOfficialWithJanetMbugua #Life #OtherPlans #EndFemicideKe #SickLeaveLikes : 3
