The rest of the time they eat flour, things made of flour,” says the pope. “We got to see things up close that very few people get to see,” says Norah O’Donnell. While in Vatican City, 60 Minutes toured parts of St. Peter’s Basilica that are closed to the public. When 60 Minutes interviewed Pope Francis, he insisted on shaking everyone’s hand in the room, including our entire crew. @norahodonnell describes the pope as warm, engaging, thoughtful, and funny. The pope shares his message to those who don’t go to mass anymore or maybe don’t see a place for themselves in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis says “men and women who have hopes and dreams… and…look to the future” are heroic. “People want to live. People forge ahead. And people are fundamentally good,” the pope tells 60 Minutes. Pope Francis says too many people have become indifferent to other people’s suffering from war, injustice, poverty, and crime. He fears too many hearts have hardened and become indifferent. The pope discusses his position on surrogacy “Sometimes surrogacy has become a business, and that is very bad,” says Pope Francis, noting that strictly speaking, surrogate motherhood is not authorized by the Catholic Church. The pope’s message to Putin: “Please, warring countries, all of them, stop. Stop the war. You must find a way of negotiating for peace,” says Pope Francis. Pope Francis, now using a wheelchair due to recent health challenges, assures @norahodonnell that his health is “fine.” When asked about resigning or retiring, he says it has never occurred to him, but said “maybe if the day comes when [his] health can go no further.” Pope Francis says the children from war-torn Ukraine “have forgotten how to smile. And that is very painful.” @norahodonnell asks the pope about efforts to reform the church after the rampant sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy worldwide for decades: “Has the church done enough?” “We have to get our hearts to feel again. We cannot remain indifferent in the face of such human dramas. The globalization of indifference is a very ugly disease,” says Pope Francis. “Global warming is a serious problem,” Pope Francis told @norahodonnell when asked about climate change during a rare and wide-ranging interview. 60 Minutes was granted a rare interview with the pope. @norahodonnell spoke with him, in his native Spanish, through a translator, for more than an hour. Pope Francis says he has never considered his personal legacy. “The Church is the legacy,” he says. “The Church, not only through the Pope, but through you, through every Christian, through everyone.” Pope Francis and @NorahODonnell discuss the amount of screen time people have daily. He stresses the importance of being present for teenagers, guiding them with intelligence and love, and listening to them. As @NorahODonnell concluded her historic interview with Pope Francis in Vatican City, she surprised him with a vinyl of Walter Cronkite’s 1969 moon landing report from @cbsnews. The gift was inspired by Francis’ book, “Life: My Story Through History,” which includes a chapter on watching Cronkite’s coverage of the Apollo 11 moon landing via translation in July 1969. At 87, Pope Francis has no intentions of slowing down — with several trips planned, including “maybe the United States.” He tells @norahodonnell it’s possible he will address the United Nations about peace if the opportunity arises.
