I understand the sentiment. I’ve known myself to lean into comfort and stability only to be disappointed in my progress, and I’ve made plenty of excuses for myself. I do think the nuance is greatly missed in these trite sayings. I had a very hard time training consistently and managing pain for years, and I saw no progress in my strength. It turns out I was lifting on a torn labrum for all of that time. I wasn’t making excuses, I had a very real reason I cut down the volume and intensity of my training. It’s hard to squat 6 days a week when your hip gets inflamed after more than a few full ROM reps. Now that I’m 2 surgeries down and ‘fully recovered’, the scars serve as a reminder that not everything is an excuse, and of the fact that 24 hours post-op I went to the gym and hit shoulders. – We see this in our lives everywhere. Sometimes money is tight and no matter how much we want to, we simply can’t afford a coach or a trainer or a specific meal plan. Sometimes there are medical considerations. Sometimes you’re working full time and taking care of kids at home and are at the point of exhaustion before you’ve even had a chance to think about getting in a workout. That’s not a moral failure, that’s living and being human. – I can only say so much as I constantly struggle to be honest with myself about my ability to do more while also being understanding with myself. Everything has an opportunity cost, and an extra 10 minutes of cardio could mean cutting into a full nights sleep, or it could be cutting into doom scrolling on Instagram. I encourage you to stay aware of your reasons, your excuses, and the fact that we’re all human beings attempting to navigate this world and our ideas of progress and fulfillment as best we can. – And yes, I’m aware that I’m long-winded – #trainwithtatumtots #tatumtotstatumthoughts #tatumtotstatumsquats #weightlifting #fitness #runsupps #herpowerisherpurpose #noexcuses Traveling for work always presents a unique set of challenges when it comes to eating and training. While I can usually find a place to train, having very little control of where I’m eating, when I’m eating , and what I’m eating is a bit stressful. This is one of a million ways I’m grateful to be working with @workingagainstgravity. While I was out of town for a week mid-cut for nationals, @n_sahlin was there for me as I sent her messages every day, center about things that had absolutely nothing to do with food, and much more. I may not be in a cut currently, but after my “eat whatever you want, you’re not cutting anymore” phase, I wanted to dial back in and feel better about my nutrition. We’re now mid-trip and I’m feeling good, finding the best options where I can, and downing protein shakes before bed to meet my macros 😂 If you’re looking to get dialed in while keeping balance and having a good relationship with food, I’d highly recommend. It’s not maxing out every day, it’s not always your favorite lift, it’s not always chasing the pump. The real work is done in the everyday. It’s done in the 70-80% range. It’s done in drop sets and using every day as a technique focus. When you find your joy and your “fun” in the work, that’s where you find your discipline and your motivation. It’s taken me years to fall in love with the boring stuff, but now that I’m here I know this is where trusting the process happens. The boring stuff pays off.
