We couldn’t go to Australia due to Covid and quarantine restrictions so started the process of designing and making costumes in my sitting room and garden! Eventually moving into a tiny local studio after meeting the post-apocalyptic nightmares in the kitchen became a bit much at breakfast! We worked via Zoom and FaceTime with George and with our Sydney workshop set up by Mel Dykes which, although not ideal, meant we had good communication despite occasionally having to be compos mentis at 4am to join in with production meetings on Australian time. This experience has made me SO appreciate being on site to work with the crew in person, but is a very useful tool to add into the arsenal of what it takes to be a costume designer. @lauren_reyhani_costume @madmaxsaga Now that the dust/sand! has settled and I can think a little straighter about the extraordinary experience that was Furiosa … I thought it would be fun to show off a little of the process starting in London, in my home which turned itself into a studio. His costumes were born in our tiny studio in Peckham, using motorbike gear, parachutes and of course a teddy bear! We tried all sorts of paint techniques, dye for the parachute, as well as various draping looks – well aware this could be a nightmare on a motorbike …! Later in Australia we were able to fit Chris Hemsworth and refine the whole look to suit everyone’s vision, with the final costume being a collaborative exercise as it should be on any film. So here are some photos of the ideas on the stands, figuring it all out with Lauren Reyhani and Stephen Miles, fitting and working with Dan Blacklock, Chris’s Key Costumer in Sydney, before shooting in Broken Hill. It was a journey, but a wonderful journey to make with Chris and George. @madmaxsaga @chrishemsworth @lauren_reyhani_costume @danblacklock08 @jasinboland ‘Finding Dementus’ Furiosa’s Dementus was not an easy character to get a grip on, ie to understand where he came from and what formed him … I found inspiration in despots, ‘gurus’ and showmen – with elements of all appearing in the final costume. Not the most relaxing experience with a full audience – normally you have the privacy of a ‘cast and crew’ screening. Not this time … the full on premiere experience and it is AMAZING!
