Chris Burkard Instagram - There’s an unmistakable magic at the foot of these Giant Sequoias… that comes with 3000 years of age, wisdom with such a large amount of life lived. It makes our lifespan seem like a blip in comparison and I often wonder about all that’s happened underneath their branches. This time it happened to be an assignment for @natgeo capturing these beautiful trees in Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Park. We’re fortunate to have these intentional places to preserve the older parts of the world that are sometimes forgotten but encourage a healthy state of wonder & calm

Chris Burkard Instagram - l lost so much sleep, maxed out credit cards, even had hair fall out from the making of my film Under an Arctic Sky… all risks that I don’t regret to this day. Even if there’s the slightest chance of the culmination of elements to make the photograph that appears in your dreams happen… it’s worth the effort to try. Just the sight of the Northern Lights dancing about that wave was a once in a lifetime experience, but to capture it, tell its story, was something beautiful in whole different way. With the fast movement of the surfers and the Aurora, I eventually landed on the @sonyalpha A7SII to tackle the challenge with the high sensitivity capabilities for this type of situation. Chris Burkard Instagram - These are the images I normally DON’T share on social media... but behind all of my favorite adventure, passion projects are also commercial shoots. Passion projects don’t always pay the bills and as a freelancer, you take on work that isn’t necessarily the most inspiring to keep your business alive & feed your family - I still do to this day. Chris Burkard Instagram - Unstad, Norway I was 26 with my first kid on the way… my wife was almost due and I decided to take one more job shooting surf in Norway before my son came. My life up to that point had been singularly focused on my career - booking back to back jobs around the globe and I hadn’t really taken a moment to look over my shoulder. Knowing it was my last shoot for the next few months, I pushed myself extra hard… spending more time in the icy waters causing frost nip in my hands & nerve damage that I still deal with to this day. There’s a lot more to unpack from this trip but I look back at the images with a palpable memory of my time there and the feeling life would never be the same when I got home

Chris Burkard Instagram - Stretching between the shores of Alaska and Russia, this chain of 14 volcanoes and 55 smaller land masses make up what is known as the Aleutian Islands… one of the most remote and difficult landscapes I’ve photographed - due to the harsh storms the frequent the Bering sea that often shrouds them in thick clouds & fog. In the past, I had set out to these islands with the goal of surfing in mind.. but in 2018, I received a grant from Conservation International to document the Alaska Maritime Wildlife Refuge - focusing more on showing the scope of the landscape and it’s largely undisturbed beauty. We caught a window in the weather - so I grabbed my camera & jumped in a small plane… resulting in some of the most unforgettable aerial views of my career.

Chris Burkard Instagram - Growing up, California was mainly sunny beaches and coastal living to me - but as I got older and started to venture outside of my hometown of Arroyo grande, I started to realize that the State actually has a few really distinct ecosystems that captivated my attention. In 2017, I decided to take an 8 day road trip to dive deeper & spend some quality time climbing, surfing, and hiking to understand the diversity in a more immersive way. I jumped in an old VW bus, with some friends and made our way to Alabama Hills to climb and camp in the desert. After a couple of nights, we moved on to the forests at the foot of the Sierra Nevada… home to some of the biggest trees in the world and continued to the northern sections of coastline to surf colder waters bordered by wetter, lush forests. Even though I’ve spent a ton of time exploring California, I still love finding new details in these ecosystems and will keep exploring them as long as I can. Shot for @prana 2017

Chris Burkard Instagram - It’s wild to consider the amount of life these mountains have witnessed throughout different chapters in the history of the world... Hannibal leading the Carthaginian army across the alps in 218 BC to the development of alpinism and years of brave people ticking off first ascents with only rudimentary gear and a strong will. Every time I set foot in them.. it invites a way of life that encourages constant awareness without distraction. You have to pay attention to your surroundings but you also feel at peace with that rhythm of life - something I find harder to achieve surrounded by man made structures. These images come from 2016 on a perfect day in the Swiss alps.. gazing down at Lake Ritom with a bit of disbelief at our luck finding a glassy lake with a backdrop more like a painting than reality…

Chris Burkard Instagram - I often talk about the colder regions of the world and am admittedly drawn to them… but to this day, the Napali Coast is still one of the most dramatic and stunning landscapes I’ve had the opportunity to photograph. Some of the steepest, knife edge ridges held together by thriving plant life feels like something you’d only see in Jurassic Park and instantly inspired me to find the aerial perspective during a personal trip with my family in 2018. I shot this video from my iPhone before reels were a thing so I could remember this surreal experience in a little more unfiltered way.

Chris Burkard Instagram - The colder corners of the world often escape our attention when considering waves to seek out and hopefully surf. Sometimes in the moment, when it’s dark, freezing, and the only thing standing between you & good waves is a wet wetsuit and a snowy parking lot, you don’t want to go through the discomfort of changing out… but without a doubt, the small sacrifice leads to greater memories, happines, and sometimes even an art form that hopefully inspires others to do the same. These memories from a surf expedition in Iceland, 2021, for @billabong were no exception… but certainly worth the effort that led us to empty lineups accompanied only by adjacent peaks and an occasional whale sighting.
