Nicole Seah Instagram - It’s a girl! Welcomed baby N to the family, and it’s been a flurry of night feeds and diaper changes whilst recovering from delivery. Today my husband casually remarked that it’s the eve of a public holiday and I mistakenly thought it was still Tuesday! Guess it will take a while before everything settles down and returns to regular programming. Everything feels familiar but new at the same time. It’s extra cute observing my eldest girl, who has been helpful and involved in the entire process, telling me “mummy eat more vegetables to make milk for meimei” and helping to burp her baby sister. Being second time (and last time) parents has also allowed us to better appreciate the milestones and moments, knowing it will be the last time and we are “closing factory” after this! Thank you to all for the well wishes over the past few months, and the encouraging advice I received on parenting with two kids. Our hearts have expanded and we’re so looking forward to watch both sisters grow up together.

Special thanks to our new young volunteers who live in East Coast GRC, as well as young couple volunteers Yuan Er and Jie Qiang, who joined us in spite of being pregnant in second trimester! Nicole Seah Instagram - It always feels like home in Fengshan hawker centre, where @fooseckguan.sg, myself and the team had our market visits this morning. It’s my third time here in 2 weeks, as we visited in the evening after our weekday house visits and after food distribution. A volunteer remarked that it almost feels like a Kampong because the residents and stallholders we meet are always warm and welcoming, and ready to engage in a deep conversation about their lives and the issues that matter to them. One interesting convo that popped up by a lecturer having her breakfast, touched on how we can continue to foster interest amongst the youth to patronise hawker centres as a social gathering point, and to appreciate the hawker trade. It is hard work being a hawker, with many of the stalls opening at 4-5am just to prep and make sure they are ready for the day. We are also appreciative for the wealth of affordable culinary options available to us, even as hawkers grapple with the rising costs of raw materials. Fengshan Hawker Centre

Nicole Seah Instagram - 朱永钦 - It is not every day that we get to encounter a celebrity during house visits, so our volunteers were extremely excited when I shared the photo with this famous resident, who was an eminent SBC host in the 1990s! Also known as Andy, Mr Zhu was extremely humble and down-to-earth. In other entertainment news, we also encountered a floor to ceiling Marvel Avengers statue collection from resident W from Taman Bedok. The estate also saw many dog lovers, with a couple proudly introducing us to their Singapore Special pup which looked like a border collie cross. Mongrels might not fetch the same price premium as pedigree dogs, however their sweet disposition and the inherent gratitude of being rescued by their owners offer a combination that make for wonderful canine companionship. If you are so inclined, adopt, don’t shop! It was a pleasant and sunny walk through the Taman Bedok estate, which we had last visited in 2020. Thankful for the volunteers who gamely took out their umbrellas and caps to cover much ground with us in the morning sun.

Nicole Seah Instagram - Thankful for the splendid weather this morning as the skies cleared up for the @wpyouthwing beach clean-up at East Coast park! Many participants ended up bringing their family members along, from toddlers to teenagers. They also provided feedback that the activity was meaningful and made them more aware of how we dispose of waste, and the need to keep our environment clean. Zero waste may be a challenging ambition for many, but all it takes sometimes are little actionable steps such as minimising our use of one-off disposables as we move towards a more mindful direction as a community. On a social note, my 4 year old had lots of fun interacting with the other kids today, and played with VP and fellow CEC member @nathanielkoh.sg ‘s toddler son. Also thankful to @abdulshariff.sg and @fadli_fawzi for always being supportive of youth wing activities!

Nicole Seah Instagram - House visits this evening in Simei with @fooseckguan.sg and @abdulshariff.sg . Was quite amused and cheered to see a supporter wearing a tee shirt that coincidentally said “Hammer Strength”. There were definitely examples of hammer strength amongst the residents we spoke to today. One was a working mum who had ended a long day at work and was in high spirits as she strove to put her active toddler to bed, in preparation for the school day tomorrow. Another was a caregiver who was taking care of an adult daughter with significant mental health challenges. The extent of invisible labour such as caregiving usually goes unrecognised, and we would go much farther as a society if we duly recognise and remunerate the hammer strength of women and men who uphold the stability and well being their families. Nicole Seah Instagram - House visits in Simei, especially the older flats that are eligible for HIP, expose us to a certain charm about the estate. It’s a combination of the tranquil surroundings in the evenings coupled with the sprawling space of old flats that make this neighbourhood particularly peaceful and welcoming. It is easy to understand why many Simei residents are attached to the area and end up living there for many years. As the estate matures, certain adjustments can be made along the way. One such potential call-out would be the top floors of each block which are usually more harshly exposed to the elements compared to the floors below. Rainwater has a tendency to pool in some areas of the corridor. Might merely be discolouration right now, but down the line it could be a fall hazard as the estate residents age. It would be worthwhile to reconsider the type of material used for floors which are exposed to rain and install perhaps a material with more texture and friction for better grip when walking. Nicole Seah Instagram - Interesting experience this morning as The Workers’ Party did our Hammer outreach at 85 Fengshan market, Simei MRT, and an area WP has not contested in - Tampines Street 81. Lots of warmth at our usual stomping ground amidst the cool rainy weather. Tampines was energetic and a new experience for many of us, as the area was last visited by WP pre-covid. Hope to see everyone again very soon. Thanks for supporting us and getting a copy of the Hammer.

Nicole Seah Instagram - The Kampong spirit was truly alive and well at Fengshan 85 today. Aunty brought down a huge pot of peach gum dessert for the neighbours to share after having their breakfast in the hawker centre - A mouthwatering assortment of options like vegetarian bee hoon, carrot cake, porridge, mee pok, you tiao… The list goes on. Fengshan residents are blessed to live near this culinary heaven! She had thoughtfully packed disposable bowls and offered me a portion. It lifted the spirit and was refreshing on the palate. Lots of young families this morning, as @fooseckguan.sg and the team engaged with residents. Longtime EC volunteer James had a field day practising to be a grandpa! Another team was mobilised at 58 market today to also engage with the residents. It was good to see everyone, and we will be back again soon. Fengshan Hawker Centre

Nicole Seah Instagram - Took some time off baby night duties this week to visit the flats in Bedok South, together with @abdulshariff.sg and team. It was a meaningful house visit that had a couple of residents open up and chat at length about their concerns. @fooseckguan.sg is down with covid and is taking a well deserved rest, hope he gets well soon. A wet market stallholder lamented that she was starting to see a slowdown in her 40-year old business during covid, as many have shifted to buying their produce online. I enquired if she had plans to list her business on food delivery apps but she felt that it was perhaps time to slowly consider retirement. Though it is encouraging to see many stallholders embrace digital initiatives in preparation for the future, it is also challenging for stallholders who are teetering on the edge. Let’s support wet markets where possible. Another resident shared difficulties seeking assistance since he was rendered jobless and wife fell chronically ill over the last two years. We went down the list of financial assistance schemes and asked if he had approached these institutions. Also provided him with the MPS details for his area and encouraged him to bring the right documents to expedite his appeal. Although the channels for help are readily available, many times individuals can be really stuck because they simply don’t know where to begin seeking help and they may also be mentally paralysed by the situation at hand. This underscores the importance of house visits in reaching out to them one by one. Another JC tutor shared her observations on youth mental health and felt that more could be done from a systemic and cultural level to encourage empathy and understanding towards sufferers of mental illness. The stigma is definitely fading as the years go by but there is more to be done. I’m slowly getting back into the old rhythm, but am super thankful to the EC team for consistently holding the forte over the last few months. In the meantime, it will be a juggling act to manage outreach time whilst savouring precious moments with my baby girl.

Nicole Seah Instagram - The Workers’ Party East Coast GRC team, including @fooseckguan.sg and @abdulshariff.sg , was out and about on this sunny National Day at the various markets and locations in EC - 58, 85, 216, 16, Bedok Interchange and Simei. East Coast GRC residents were cheered by patriotic and celebratory vibes as flags were distributed to stallholders, children and the elderly. Nicole Seah Instagram - Imagine that your weekly groceries for the family have increased from $60 to $80. And put yourselves in the shoes of a person who is earning $3k a month, versus someone earning $15k a month. For those who live in excess, a GST increase may seem like a mere annoyance. For those who already struggle to put food on the table, such an increase can cause a family to make hard choices such as whether they can even afford a tray of eggs. There is a perfect storm of factors that we cannot control, such as the effects of demand outweighing supply of products, supply chain and manufacturing challenges, covid and the war in Ukraine. That said, we can control one factor domestically. The timing of a GST hike during this period of extraordinary inflation and its staggered rollout over the next few years might also contribute to unintended knock-on effects, as prices go up to absorb costs in anticipation of each hike. This means that many Singaporeans might feel this pinch get progressively worse, and that daily cup of kopi-o as a morning routine might turn into a luxury as time goes by. As we encounter more and more residents at the markets lamenting this point, we do our best to educate on the external factors and why public spending needs to be funded. But one cannot turn a blind eye to the struggles of many, and it begs the question of the timing of a hike for this season that Singaporeans are going through.
