Riley Elliott Instagram - So we had a baby girl!!!! ✨ Sailor Jane Elliott ✨ Born 3rd October, 3.3kg. I’ve held baby sharks before, a few human ones here and there, but never have I experienced something quite like this. After an amazing labour by Amber, where she did 3/4 of the labour at home, we were surrounded by the most incredible team of women at North Shore Hospital. I was instructed by our midwife to catch my very own baby girl as she came into the world. From her very first moment in this world she was eyes open, super inquisitive and has been a dream so far, peacefully observing her new world with us. She’s already been in the water with Great Whites for Shark Week (inside mummy), has a wolf for a brother, and will likely live a very oceanic life. Lots of love little Sailor. And Amber, I am and always will be blown away by your strength and beauty xxx

Riley Elliott Instagram - We found Daisy's tag!!!! Thank you to everyone who put the word out, shared the posts, searched the beaches, told your relatives, amazing work. Long story short, I got a phone call a day ago from a lovely lady called Leanne in Gate Pa, who said her flat mate David found it while walking his dog Thor along the beach. David and Thor search for rubbish every day along the beaches, to keep NZ clean, and stumbled across this weird device. He brought it home, shared the intrigue with Leanne, but the next day they had a hospital appointment and were away for a few days. Understandably they were out of the loop for a time (the days you were all sharing the questions where Daisy's tag was), and so when they got home, they turned on their phones and holy cow, saw the messages everywhere on social media, the news, the paper etc etc thanks to all of you! And then I got the call. The following day I visited them, who were huge shark fans, both grew up in the JAWS era, but both however love what sharks stand for and do in the oceans, and they were so stoked to have brought Daisy's tag back to the Great White Project. Next step, find Daisy 🙂 and continue to learn about her and other Great Whites sharks starting to share the waves with us in NE NZ. Thank you so so much for all of your support. This project wouldn't have even got off the ground without the amazing NZ public, so thank you, and to all the media and news agencies for helping share the information.

Riley Elliott Instagram - I’m going to be a dad! So stoked to have got to a point in this journey where Amber and I feel confident enough to share our joy, because the biggest thing learnt so far, has been the realities behind trying. I feel like I have a new found sensitivity, likely in part to aid in becoming a father but also because I have felt so powerless in the hurdles my incredible wife has overcome. Miscarriages are things I had never heard much about, but when you are unlucky and experience them, you realise you are not alone and in fact so many friends have run the same road at times. For those who haven’t had to, I do not mean to take anything away from your experiences, I imagine and will likely see that creating a human that then entirely depends on you is hard enough. This will hopefully be our next chapter. But up to this point all I can say is that women are so incredibly strong, so driven, and so capable. It’s really hard when you as a guy feel like the car driving alongside the railway tracks and it’s starting to sway. What I’ve learned so far is all you can do is be a rock of support and tell them that everything will be alright. Seeing tears rush from my wife at our half way scan, being happy tears, made the journey all worth it. To all those mums and ones to be, you are amazing. None of us would be here without you. To all those dads, I can’t wait for dad group chat lol. My next big task before the baby comes is to figure out how I juggle my existing 6year old wolf who never likes sharing the back seat!

Riley Elliott Instagram - The third Great White shark has been tagged!!! Mananui is named by Te Whānau a Tauwhao, the Hapū of the area where she was tagged. She is a female Great White shark, 3.2m in length, making her the largest Great White tagged so far. Her presence was awe inspiring, in size and demeanour. She wears battle scars and scratches, but was cautious and calculated. This prestige led to her naming; Mananui is the inshore headland of Bowentown, looking over the area she was tagged. Mananui was a stronghold Pā site protecting Te Whānau a Tauwhao people. This Great White was identified through fishermen photos by Dr Elliott, as having resided in this area for the last three summers and thus, like Mananui the Pā, she represents a stronghold presence of prestige and great mana. At this size she is classified as a sub-adult, which means she is no longer a juvenile, but is not reproductively mature. Generally at this size/age, Great Whites’ metabolism speeds up, requiring them to feed on seals. Their teeth widen for hunting this prey, compared to more needle-like teeth of juveniles which eat fish. Mananui is now on the Great White App so follow her movements live every time she surfaces. This tag was offered as a Koha to the local Iwi of this area, who culturally respect the Moana and animals which reside in it. The presence of Great Whites in their area is seen as a blessing, as Māori myth and legend depict the Great White as a guardian of people, with the legendary Mangoroa being a Great White which was placed into the night sky becoming the Milky Way as we see it today. I was humbled to have the local Hapū Te Whanau a Tauwhao bless my Waka with a Karakia for its voyage in tagging Great Whites in this Moana. While it may look intense tagging her, you will see that the specific tag placement is as non invasive as it gets in this field of work and that’s reflected by the fact that she turned right around and continued to bless us with her interactions for several hours. Riley Elliott Instagram - The GREAT WHITE APP is here! Over the past several weeks I have been on the water trying to deploy satellite tags on Great White sharks in NE New Zealand. Through the incredible generosity of the NZ public, 16 tags have been sponsored. Two Great Whites have been tagged so far, Daisy and Takami, making history as the first ever tagged in this region. If you visit www.sustainableoceansociety.co.nz on any device, you will land in the Great White App. This has been developed thanks to @earthrangertech and The Dream Factory and it's free to the entire world. I will endeavour to tag more Great Whites in the New Year, and ongoing, in order for us to not only generate novel scientific data critical to the conservation of this endangered and protected species, but also to provide public information to empower a greater understanding of how our recreation activities may overlap with theirs; the ultimate goal being a healthy respect and level of co-existence which ensures we get to enjoy the ocean, and they continue to live in it, providing key ecosystem services. There's plenty of information on the App, below the map, regarding how to use it, how detection locations are obtained and why some appear to be on land at times. Riley Elliott Instagram - A very exciting Great White project I am launching this summer in NZ and YOU can be directly involved by sponsoring a shark’s satellite tag, naming it, receiving scientific insight on what it does and where it goes anywhere in NZ and the world! More than this, the data will be shared live to the public via an incredible philanthropic web application created by @earthrangertech so that we can all learn about where these animals go, what they do, and of most importance, how their movement and behaviour overlaps with our own. This type of information sharing has proven effective around the world to allow for better coexistence with these apex predators. Riley Elliott Instagram - The incredible clip of the moment @jimipartingtonsdx experienced the full potential of an adult Great White shark but walked away unharmed. This clip comes from one of the best @sharkweek shows I have ever seen, Great White Open Ocean, created by @jeff_kurr also featuring @animalbrandon and @dickie_chivell with filming by @liquid_action_films It’s such an amazing story for me because it showcases someone with true talent and passion for working with animals. @jimipartingtonsdx brings the nature kid out in all of us when watching this, the lust to understand wild animals and even the largest and most dangerous of them. And even after such a potentially life threatening encounter, he had the knowledge and experience to look down, spot the shark and swim for the boat but then the most important part, tell us that he chose to put himself there, in a plastic box, where the shark continually started testing him and it, and how the shark recognised when he wasn’t looking and came in full tilt to test, likely what the cage was and why Jimi was in it. There’s no blame on the shark from Jimi nor anyone, rather the only blame is the pure intrigue to learn more about animals and how far one can go to do that. If you haven’t seen this show it is amazing. So well shot and edited, incredible music that emotionally connects you to what it is that draws us to swim with sharks, and it’s a tale of passion, determination and a guy who will be back working with sharks because that’s who he is. Thanks @sharkweek for enabling the creation of some pure magic here. Congrats to the team involved and all the best Jimi on the recovery. #sharkweek
